Bawumia Lauds MUSIGA …For Promoting Welfare Of Aging Musicians

A delegation from the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) over the weekend called on the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, at the Jubilee House in Accra, to discuss pertinent issues about the Creative Arts industry in Ghana.

Describing MUSIGA as a union seeking the betterment of aging musicians, the Vice President commended the body for creating the Ageing Musicians Welfare Fund (AMWeF) to take care of old musicians and also for the institution of a Presidential Grand Ball to celebrate music heroes and heroines.

He further stressed that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government is committed to continuing to develop the creative art industry, and will do everything in its power to realize that vision.

Ageing Musicians Welfare Fund

After what can be described as a fruitful discussion, an agreement was reached to make the Vice President the lifetime patron for the ageing musicians.

The Communications Director of MUSIGA, Ahumah Bosco Ocansey, in an exclusive interview with The New Publisher, described the meeting as a successful one.

”Yes, we went to appeal to the Vice President to be the lifetime patron for the Ageing musicians. He accepted our proposal and pledged his support. He has promised to do his possible best to secure better welfare of musicians” he said.

According to him, AMWeF, which was established by the Obour-led administration and launched at the Golden Tulip Hotel on August 9, 2013, would see better prospects going forward, based on the involvement of the Vice President.

Bosco told the paper that the Vice President disclosed to the delegation, plans by government towards the construction of a new national headquarters for the Union is underway.

”The announcement, which was made at the sixth MUSIGA Presidential Grand Ball earlier this year, is seeing fulfillment. Dr. Bawumia assured us of a response as early as possible”, he indicated.

The MUSIGA Elections

On the Union’s election, which has been halted temporarily due to a court injunction served by one of its Presidential Candidates, Ras Caleb Appiah-Levi, Bosco said lawyers of the union are working on a response.

“At the moment our lawyers are working on the summons and after filing our response we will see the way forward. The lawyers are expected to brief us concerning those matters in the coming days.” he noted.

Present at the meeting with the Vice President were current executives led by President of MUSIGA and hiplife musician, Bice Osei Kuffour, popularly known as Obour, a number of veteran musicians including Nana Kwame Ampadu, Teacher Kwame, among others.
